I graduated from what was then Pembroke State College with a degree in English. In my senior year, I married John Ferguson and moved to Cheraw, S.C. where I taught school in Wallace, S.C. then Cheraw, S.C. We moved to Columbia, S.C. and over the next few years lived in N.C., S.C., Washington, D.C., Virginia, Louisiana, and finally Texas.

I worked as a secretary in the Real Estate Development field for a few years, then as a Real Estate Broker. In Houston, I finally found what I was meant to be and spent thirty five years as a legal secretary, the last 18 years at Susman Godfrey L.L.P., an internationally known litigation firm. In Houston, I divorced and then met the man I was to spend my life with. Jerry and I had 31 years together

Although he was to become my favorite teacher - and possibly the reason I chose to become an English teacher, Mr. Thomas could sound cruel with what he considered his brand of wit. One day he reduced a girl in our English class to tears, and I took it on myself to take him to task for his sarcastic manner. He informed me that I didn't know the difference between sarcasm and wit and assigned the entire class to write a theme for homework entitled "The Difference Between Sarcasm and Wit." Needless to say, that didn't make me popular with the class that day, but at least he gave me an "A" on the paper. (And although he would never have admitted it, he did ease up a bit.)
